What an emergency call-out means here

An electrician answers

Not a call centre taking a message. You describe the fault to the person who will attend it.

Evenings and weekends

Call-out is not limited to normal working hours anywhere across London and Surrey.

Made safe first

The immediate danger is dealt with before anything else, then we agree what the repair needs.

Before you call

What counts as an electrical emergency

If any of these apply, switch off at the consumer unit if you can do so safely, and call us. Do not wait until morning.

Burning smell or scorch marks

A hot plastic smell near a socket, switch or the consumer unit, or any browning or blistering around an accessory. This is overheating, and it is how electrical fires start.

Sparking or arcing

Visible sparks when you plug something in or operate a switch, or a crackling or buzzing noise from an accessory or the board.

RCD that will not reset

A device that trips again immediately, or within seconds. There is a live fault on the installation, and repeatedly resetting it will not fix it.

Water into electrics

A leak above a light fitting, a flood reaching sockets, or water in the consumer unit. Isolate the supply if the board is dry and reachable, and call.

Exposed live conductors

A broken socket or switch with wiring accessible, a cable damaged during other work, or a fitting pulled off the wall.

Total loss of power

Where your neighbours still have supply and nothing on your board has tripped. If the whole street is dark it is a network fault. See below.

While you wait

What to do before we arrive

  • Switch off at the consumer unit if you can reach it safely and it is dry. The main switch is usually the largest one, on the left or right of the row.
  • Unplug what you can. Deal first with anything that was in use when the problem started. If a fault clears when one appliance is unplugged, that appliance is the cause.
  • Do not reset repeatedly. A device that trips straight back is telling you there is a live fault. Forcing it in defeats the protection that is doing its job.
  • Keep away from water. Do not touch anything electrical while standing in water, and do not attempt to mop up around live equipment.
  • Do not remove covers. The inside of a consumer unit stays live even with the main switch off, at the incoming terminals.
  • If there is fire or smoke, leave and call 999. Only then worry about the electrics.

Is the whole street dark?

Then the fault belongs to your local network operator and an electrician cannot help. Call 105 from any phone to reach them directly. It is the national number for power cuts and it works anywhere in England, Scotland and Wales.

Common questions

Questions we are asked most often

What counts as an electrical emergency?

A burning smell or scorch marks, sparking, a consumer unit that is hot, water entering electrics, exposed live conductors, a total loss of power that is not a wider outage, or an RCD that trips again immediately after resetting. If in doubt, switch off at the consumer unit and call.

What should I do before an electrician arrives?

Switch off at the consumer unit if you can reach it safely, and switch off and unplug anything that was in use when the problem started. Do not reset a device that trips straight back out, because it is protecting you from something. Keep water away from the installation, and do not open a consumer unit or remove an accessory front plate. If there is smoke or fire, leave the building and call 999.

My power has gone off. Is it my problem or the network's?

Check whether your neighbours have power. If the whole street is off, call 105 to reach your local network operator, because the fault is theirs and an electrician cannot help. If it is only your property, check the consumer unit for a tripped device, then call us.

Can you make it safe tonight and repair it properly later?

That is often the sensible approach. The priority on a call-out is to remove the danger and restore what can safely be restored. Where a permanent repair needs parts, daylight or a longer isolation, the installation is left safe and the repair is booked for a time that suits you.
